The Angry Planet: Should we ignore it as natural?

The frequency of recent natural disasters, including the cyclone in Burma, an earthquake in China, tornadoes in Arkansas and Oklahoma and Georgia, volcano eruptions in Chile, fires in Florida and Colorado, forces us to ponder why is the Earth reacting so harshly? Whether it’s manmade or nature’s way of responding to external forces, no one is still sure.

Around the planet, angry planet as you said, a growing share of the devastation triggered by natural disasters stems from ecologically destructive practices and from putting people in harm's way. Several ecosystems have been frayed to the point where they are no longer resilient and able to withstand natural disturbances. the ground condition has set the stage for 'unnatural disasters' caused due to human actions against nature's paradise. By degrading forests, engineering rivers, filling in wetlands, and destabilizing the climate, we are unraveling the strands of a complex ecological safety net. many of the natural disasters are actually unnatural in fact.

The population explosion in the 20th century and the built-up environment means that more people and economic activities are vulnerable in this century. The high rate of migration of people from rural areas to urban and semi-urban areas has increased the vulnerability to the full array of natural hazards. The increasing number of people living in metro cities in the developing world has put their lives at risk. These human-exacerbated disasters often take their heaviest toll on those who can least afford it, the poor people.

The major part of the world population is ecologically, socially, and economically not so strong and prepared for the onslaught of storms, floods, and other hazards.

Natural and unnatural disasters are different and there there is an important distinction between both kind of disasters. We cannot name every natural disturbance as a disaster. Every disaster is not completely natural. The have have damaged many natural systems in such a way that the nature's ability to bounce back from disturbance has been largely diminished. Deforestation results in climate change, and raises the risk of fires. Destruction of coastal wetlands, dunes, and mangroves damages nature's ability to absorb coastal storms. In the case of earthquakes, as it occurred in China, we humans can't do any thing. earthquake is a co9mplete natural disaster.

We live in a world where we can no longer accept that accidents or disasters are natural. Disasters are often invested with some hidden meaning in it. They are rarely perceived as just an accident disasters actually appear as events of profound significance.

The concept - disasters are caused by acts of nature - is being displaced by the other concept - disasters are the outcome of acts of human beings. How do we perceive a disaster has an important impact in the way in which it is experienced by us. Yes, planet is angry and the result is the frequent occurrence of disasters like recent earthquake in China.

Of course, we should not try to poke in our noses in the affairs of the nature. Natural disasters are very much an indication of the changes this planet is undergoing, or for that matter we can even say that this is nature’s own way of maintaining an equilibrium. And who else except this planet can know what its been going through and how to cope with it.

We can only look at the lava flowing out of a volcano but we cannot and should not try stopping it from flowing. There is a very valid reason behind the molten fire coming out of the Earth.. no need for any lame guesses and no need to employ fire fighters to extinguish the fire.

Same is the case with tornadoes and earthquakes and famines... which can be correlated to the normal humanly instances such as sneezing, hiccups and other bowel movements that we are accustomed to.

These natural disasters are perfectly natural and mankind should avoid ’seeking an answer or solution to such phenomenas’. The only option mankind has is to stay away from the danger by keeping a check on its habit and maintaining a nature-friendly habitat.

People start blaming others when they become victims of disasters. They blame someone else for their misfortune. Who is willing to take responsibility for there own choices? No body.. We are not ready to accept that we have done so much wrong to the plant.

Disaster always comes along with another disaster when it takes 3 days for any serious relief effort to arrive in the disaster-affected region. In case of Myanmar, the military junta is not accepting the international help and China think they have enough power to help the affected people. Be it natural or unnatural, victims are always the same - poor people.

yes, just ignore it and get ready to face another fallout and how much that would engulf you never know. these incidents are merely the tip of the iceberg much is yet to come if we'll continue polluting atmosphere at the present rate. however, it's never late to act than to wait for another disaster.

see this is choice between development and the environmental protection. the question is how long we can maintain balance between growth and environment. and these devastating tornadoes and earthquake is not something new but had occurred even in the past as well. we can ignore them only to some extent not always. we can't go longer with the present situation so there is a need for the world powers to look into the matter seriously but before it gets too late.

We should not ignore the anger of the planet. It is agreed that a lot of the natural disasters may be happening as a part of the natural course but many of them are also happening due to the atrocities that we humans are committing in the form of nuclear tests, atmospheric pollution and other harmful activities on our planet. How long will our planet silently bear all this? Let us not undermine her anger by ignoring it…because her anger might cost us our very existence someday. Let us do our bit to save ourselves and our planet.

Earth is angry. It has been pushed too far. Since many years factories have belched smoke and pollution into the air.

Trees are disappearing. Man has destroyed many forests and killed many animals in his greed.

The earth’s atmosphere is very fragile. It maintains its poise and balance very carefully. The smallest transgression by man disturbs that.

Now it is payback time. Violent storms, strong earthquakes and killer tornadoes....This is just the beginning.

Man, stop screwing around with Earth.

No one really knows for sure! our planet is a complex system and a dynamic one too. what we call natural disasters like earthquakes, cyclones etc are infact natural processes of the earth which have shaped it. human intervention have certainly disturbed the earths evolutionary process. we can not avoid them but will have to figure out a way to live with them.

Agree that the present crisis of planet Earth is man made. Food crisis, Water crisis and Global Warming crisis is behind all these disaters.

Planet Earth might be like an all forgiving mother. But there are times when even the loving mother gets angry.

Mother Earth is very angry. Its children have lost all regard for it.

Earthquakes, floods, cyclones....This is the mother scolding.

There is still time. If we come to our senses, we can save Mother Earth.

Otherwise, we too will die with our great mother as we know her.
