Philippines typhoon: Death toll reaches 1,000 and is still risingTyphoon Durian, which is the fourth in a row in the past four months, hit Philippines on Thursday at 140 miles an hour wrecking the archipelago. The death toll feared to have reached 1,000, as per Red Cross’s estimate, and is continuously rising amidst relief efforts. President Gloria Arroyo has declared a state of national calamity. Rescue operations are delayed, owing to destructive landslides that buried more people alive and left around 66,000 people homeless.

Relief funds have started pouring in both from the government and the global community with Canada pledging $870,000, Japan sending $173,000 and the Netherlands Red Cross $53,000. Massive volcanic mudslides, flooding and blocked roads have thwarted the search and rescue efforts killing more in the due course. Power loss in most of the areas has made communication almost impossible hampering the operation and adding fuel to the catastrophe aftermath.

Can’t we combat nature’s fury?

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo says, “We are no strangers to this kind of tragedy, and we have always been able to recover and become stronger.” She’s now ordered Department of Environment to boost efforts to track the movement of tropical cyclone and forewarn of the possible danger. It was not done earlier, is an irony, which we’ll not forget, with not enough survivors to remember even. When it’s clear that the possibility of a tropical cyclone in the western Pacific or Indian oceans are maximum during this time of the year, the country should be prepared for it in advance, especially when we’ve already tasted the wrath of Tsunami.

With the fear of approaching Typhoon Durian, Vietnam has already ordered rapid evacuation and tens of thousands have already on the move to safe places. Despite technological advancements, we’re still not able to ward-off nature’s fury. However, it’s not because we’re not equipped enough to combat it, perhaps, we’re still not deft enough to use it in the right way and at the right time. Greenpeace Southeast Asia clearly states that catastrophic events like this will increase in the future due to global warming and we should be prepared to fight it out. Along with massive preparation, we’ll have to work collectively towards restricting climate change or soon nature will devour us wearing the mask apparently gifted by us.

Everytime, when such devastations happen, governments are ready with a mouth full of words and promises. I don’t wish to say that nothing is done to combat such situations. Pre-warnings are being made in case of fear of any approaching nature’s fury.

But, just the technological advancements can’t do anything. How many homes can you evacuate within a short span of time? How much assets, infact, you can save? The need of hour is to combat the climate change, to stop the global warming, and to be environment friendly. Atleast, we can lower down the chances of such ill happenings.

I agree with Naveen, in order to combat with these kinds of natural disasters, we’ll have to look into the measures that could avert global warming coz till some extent, this is responsible to these kinds of catastrophe.

We are always ready to fight back any terrorist attack but we cannot stop natural disasters... We can only help the sufferers and just help.

Technology is advancing to great extent but we are always helpless in front of the natural calamities...

Who challenged the Nature to act like this?

We are always trying to get more and more from Nature without any nurturing from our side. It remains cool, calm, quiet, but when limits are crossed than results are open for whole World.

At least now we have to understand to live friendly with nature. ”Live and Let Live”.

Man can not stop natural calamities but efforts can be implemented to lower down the odds of such calamities.

these kinda wrecks are taking place subsequently coz of molestation with natural phenomenon… mainly these catastrophes are occurring due to the disorder in different rock-layers under surface causing tidal momentum in the sea water n hence the big storms tha affects the costal line miserably……… big example is aunnnnnnnnt Tsumaniiiiiiiiiiiiii itself….!!!

by now i think there are ways to predict these type of cyclones so that people can be fore-warned but instead the governments do not invest in these technologies neither they are providing good and scientifically build houses so that they provide better protection but instead they sleep until the next disaster strikes. then the same compensation and rehabilitation routine is followed like the loss of life does not matter at all to these powerful people

It is very difficult to control such natural calamities for human beings have really messed up with the nature and, now, in turn we will have to be prepared to bear the wrath of the potent nature.

What we can do is just lower the effect of such disasters. I don’t thing it is possible to control such calamities until and unless there is an apt or right ecological balance.

Nature will not forgive us if we won’t stop interfering the natural things on earth, global warming, typhoon, earthquakes, flood, etc all may be called as man-caused natural disasters only.

This is what happens when we encroach the nature. The reason may be the incresing population on the earth. As this goes on increases the demand also grows in terms of food, shelter etc. This results in imbalance of nature and causes natures fury.
